As we move into a new age of empowerment through access to information, expecting people from all over the world to collaborate in global teams, the issue of culture comes into bright focus. If you’ve been tracking the progress of the Indian BPO sector you have seen that the approach has been one of problem solving – “trying to teach a dog to climb a tree and expecting tigers to eat grass!”

Ours is an ancient approach much like Noah and his Ark. Peaceful coexistence of cultures to co-create the best. We’re lucky to be in a mini civilization called India – perhaps the best learning ground for Corporate Anthropology*.

*Anthropology is distinguished from other social-science disciplines by its emphasis on cultural relativity, in-depth examination of context, and cross-cultural comparisons. (courtesy Wikipedia)

Unless we’re prepared to look inside the box, there’s no way we can create ‘out-of-the-box’ solutions. Collaboration can only happen if we can open the Black Box and understand where people are really coming from.

Building a global corporate culture needs a set of common values for creating a binding philosophy. Then letting go. Giving people the freedom to act in their own ways since ‘one size will not fit all’. Remember that there are differences coming from a hierarchy of sorts, each level having substantial influence.
